A little about me

Hello! My name is Karina, and I’m a translation graduate with a strong interest in localisation and multilingual content. I enjoy working with languages not just to translate meaning, but to adapt tone, style, and cultural context so that content feels natural to its audience.

I have experience using tools such as Trados, memoQ, and Lokalise, and I’ve been involved in projects related to translation, proofreading, and project coordination. One of my key experiences was contributing to the “We Wear Heritage” project, where I supported content delivery and collaborated with different teams.

As a native Spanish speaker fluent in English, I’m especially drawn to roles that combine language, content and quality, such as localisation, QA, and content editing.

I’m currently building my portfolio and looking for opportunities to grow within the translation and localisation industry.

My Journey

My interest in languages and communication developed through my studies in humanities and social sciences, where I became increasingly interested in how language shapes meaning and cultural understanding. This led me to pursue a BA (Hons) in Translation at the University of Westminster, where I specialised in Spanish and English.

During my degree, I explored different areas of translation, including intercultural communication, localisation, and professional translation practices. I developed technical skills using tools such as Trados, memoQ, and Lokalise, while also building a strong foundation in proofreading and quality assurance.

One of the most valuable experiences during my studies was working as a Translation Project Manager for the “We Wear Heritage” project. This allowed me to collaborate with different stakeholders, manage tasks and deadlines, and understand how translation projects operate in real-world contexts.

Alongside my studies, my experience as an interpreter further strengthened my ability to work under pressure, communicate effectively, and adapt language to different situations and audiences.

Through these experiences, I developed a strong interest in localisation and content-focused roles that bring together language, culture, and user experience. I am now looking to continue growing in this field and build a career in translation and localisation.

Project 1

Translation Project: Fantastically Great Women Who Made History

Context

This project involved translating a children’s nonfiction book from English into Spanish for young girls aged 6–12 in Venezuela. The purpose of the translation was to create an engaging, educational, and culturally accessible text that promotes gender equality, empowerment, and historical awareness.

Key Decisions & Approach

For this translation, I prioritised naturalness, readability, and engagement for a young audience. Rather than translating literally, I adapted expressions to ensure the text felt inspiring and accessible in Spanish.

  • I used dynamic and emotive vocabulary such as “valiente” and “audaz” to reflect the empowering tone of the original text.
  • I adapted sentence structure to sound more fluid and natural in Spanish, particularly in rhetorical questions and exclamatory sentences, which are key features of children’s literature.
  • I maintained a direct and motivational tone, using second-person structures (e.g. “creer en ti misma”) to engage the reader personally.
  • Cultural and linguistic choices were made with the target audience (young readers in Venezuela) in mind, ensuring clarity while preserving the original message.

Challenges & Solutions

One of the main challenges was adapting cultural references and historical concepts for a younger audience unfamiliar with certain contexts.

To address this, I:

  • Simplified complex ideas without losing meaning
  • Used clear and accessible language
  • Balanced educational content with readability

Another challenge was maintaining the multimodal nature of the text (e.g. speech bubbles, visuals, layout), which required careful consideration of text length and structure.

Outcome

This project strengthened my ability to:

  • Adapt tone and style for specific audiences
  • Apply localisation strategies in children’s content
  • Maintain consistency and clarity across a full-length translation
  • Balance linguistic accuracy with cultural relevance
We Wear Heritage
Project 2

Project: Localisation & Project Coordination "We Wear Heritage"

Context

This project was developed in collaboration with CVS Brent and Brent Museum, focusing on cultural heritage and community engagement across diverse communities in London. The aim was to make heritage more accessible by exploring traditional clothing, storytelling, and community participation through multilingual content and events.

Project Overview

The project involved translating and adapting a large-scale report from English into Spanish, covering community outreach, heritage initiatives, and event documentation. The content included formal institutional language, cultural references, and detailed project descriptions.

Key Decisions & Approach

In this project, I focused on clarity, consistency, and cultural adaptation within a formal institutional context.

  • I adapted organisational terminology (e.g. “VCSE organisations”) while maintaining accuracy and readability in Spanish.
  • I ensured the tone remained formal and professional, appropriate for a public-facing report.
  • I prioritised clarity over literal translation, restructuring sentences where necessary to improve flow and comprehension.
  • I maintained consistency across a large volume of content, particularly with repeated terms and project-related concepts.

Project Management & Coordination

As part of my role, I contributed to the coordination and organisation of the project:

  • Managed tasks and deadlines to ensure timely delivery
  • Supported communication between team members and stakeholders
  • Ensured consistency and quality across translated content
  • Contributed to maintaining structured workflows

This experience gave me practical insight into how real-world localisation projects are managed, particularly when working with multiple contributors and complex content.

Challenges & Solutions

One of the main challenges was handling dense, information-heavy content while maintaining readability in Spanish.

To address this, I:

  • Simplified sentence structures without losing meaning
  • Ensured terminology remained consistent throughout the document
  • Adapted culturally specific references to maintain clarity for the target audience

Another challenge was translating content related to community heritage and cultural identity, which required sensitivity and accuracy to preserve meaning across cultures.
